Punjabi Keyboard (virtual) layout is ready for Use with Nokia N900.
Please suggest if you have any comments about it.
Add Punjabi Layout to N900:
Download ukeyboard
install it on your device.
Download attached file n900keyboardlayout.zip [1], unzip it
and scp "pa-jhelum.vkb" file to N900 in following directory:
/usr/share/ukeyboard
Enable Punjabi Layout:
Goto
Settings-> Text input -> 1st language --Change this to ਜੇਹਲਮ (ਪੰਜਾਬੀ)
Now you can start type Punjabi. Meanwhile I am trying to add
this layout to ukeyboard so that Punjabi support available
by default.
Note: you need to install fonts for Punjabi, please read
Enable Punjabi on N900
[1] Source file for that is also attached, if you want to change, you can
easily do that. Following ukeyboard instructions to edit and compile it.

I got Dell Studio 1457 with Intel i7 processor yesterday.
for Fedora 12 installation major problems:
1) Broadcom Ethernet is not detected (fixed)
2) Once Display Blank, reboot and then only start,
(this was true for anaconda also) (still not working)
3) No Sound (still not working) Fedora Bug 562695
Dell Studio 1457 Smolt Profile
Installation:
after 4 attempt to install Fedora 12, (3 failed
with no display), I get message that there is
no Network device detected on your machine,
so please use DVD or Complete CD (I was
using network install). (that is why
keep DVD with you at home:-) )
Got KDE Live CD, installation was quite fast,
Ethernet was not detected, but Wireless
was working (it is intel half-mini card).
Rebooted and Display gone. After waiting
for few minutes, reboot again this time
display was working (now after shutdown,
I need to reboot 2 times to get display working)
Broadcom Ethernet:
there is workaround given here (Fedora Bug)

modprobe -r tg3
it is working, but need to use this each time
Video: ATI detected and worked on proper resolution automatically
Audio: Still not working

Recovering a lost Windows Serial Key...
During Repair of Dell XPS Laptop, I lost Windows 7's
Cover, which I got as Upgrade from Vista (so no
sticker on laptop). It includes Windows Serial No.
It lost this morning, and I installed Windows
without this key, but as need to activate within
30 days, I have to find some solution.
Two Software I found for this work (as I had already
installed Windows 7 on my old bad sector hard disk)
Belarc Advisor
It has Free, Personal Use, working perfect
Recover-Keys
Free for Demo, not perfect and PAID:-)
Finally, I attach old harddisk, boot windows 7 (old installation),
install both software, Recover-keys find few things
Office, Call for Duty and 1 more, but now Windows key,
Then install Belarc Advisor and it create report and
show me in Web browser, yes it contains Windows keys
with IE serial key. So I got the key to Windows Activation.
It save money and something that Punjabi don't like to do...;-)
More information about OEM Windows Version here.

Mac, Password and local keyboard setting...
First time, just before to login to write this
post, I was stuck with Macbook, where
my user password in English character,
forgot to change keyboard back to English
(from Punjabi), while Close MacBook
(which I often do).
When I opened, it was asking for password,
tried 2-3 times, but failed, then I found that
keyboard layout is Punjabi (not English),
so it was not accpecting password.
I tried Keyboard Shortcut to change like
Fedora/Gnome did. (+ keys),
but it was not changing, Rebooted, but still
asking for password.
Finally I found solution, hard learning, but it
works
Press key + (also
key also w0rks).
may be helpful in very rare condition, but it is
working this way....

I am working to find a way to include Punjabi (and other
Indic) language to device. Few steps I completed:
Locale-Extras - Updated all Indic locale files
Indic - Project to include all i18n stuff for Indic languages
Keyboard Layout - Virtual/On-Screen Keyboard (which has no Indic support yet)
still I am not able to add my language in it, but find few things
different from my desktop machine:
/usr/share/i18n-locale-resolver/
more time required to work on this, but I have next Internet
connection in coming weeks.
This system setup on Ubuntu AMD64. Often forgot to
put variable vdso32=0 for kernel at boot time.

Linux (fedora) - HDMI Port
I purchased HDMI Cable, but not very
sure about it whether it will work or not
with my LCD TV. Cost was very ok
799/- Rs.
Windows Vista working very nice,
no problem.
with Fedora 11, It was not detected,
I have Nvidia chipset on Laptop and Desktop

So 'nouveau' driver is not able to work.
Finally install 'kmod-nvidia' and run
nvidia-setting, it works well. Detected
proper resolution and you can set as
primary Display.
for Audio (with HDMI cable), go to
Speaker Icon in notification icon.
ICON->Sound Pref->Hardware
-Profile->Output Digital Stereo (HDMI) and
that is it. It is working...
Video, Voice and All fine with Fedora.

Get Fedora 11 Update...
Today after Fresh install rawhide, there was
problem while updating package. Speed was
too slow to update, While 'fedora-rawhide.repo'
REPO was pointing to US server (which ideally fast)
after few time, I noticed that it is using
'fedora.repo' and 'fedora-updates.repo' REPO also,
which is not directly link to rawhide. During
investigation, I found following thing:
1) fedora-rawhide.repo - Rawhide packages
2) fedora.repo - Also contains link to Rawhide packages, which is not under
'../release/11', but '.../development/{ARCH}/os/'
3) fedora-update.repo - Contains Updated packages for Fedora 11,
which were newer than Rawhide release packages
kdebase and other kde packages provide this
difference.
rawhide -> kde-4.2.2*
fedora.repo - Just using rawhide repo
fedora-update.repo - > kde-4.2.3 (which is newer than rawhide)
So, If you want to use latest package, specially in India, where
local mirror is too slow, then just replace it with
some US rawhide 'baseurl' and it will work fast and you
will have latest package from 'Fedora 11 Update'

Dell XPS 13 and Fedora
Day before
yesterday I got one Dell studio XPS 13
Machine
with
intel core 2 duo
2.4. 3M L2, FSB 1066Mhz, NVIDIA® Hybrid SLI graphics,
4GB 1067MHz DDR3, Slot Load 8X max DVD+/-RW, Backlit Keyboard.
While Feodra 10 is latest release, I want rawhide 64-bit (29April2009 build) to use.
Installation was quick (remove various packages) and smooth. After
install,
*) graphics was working only 1280x768 (machine has 1280x800).
(fixed with help of Fedora Solved site)
Machine has 2 Graphics care (detected also), but working only
GeForce 9400M G, (while 256MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 9500M-GE is not used)
*) Sound was working without any issue.
*) First warning after login, I got following error "Harddisk is failing..."

(Default installation provide 'gnome-disk-utility', which notify this error)

It was (and is) showing that airflow-temperature was more then 'worse'.
I was not able to do anything for this:-(
*) Webcam is working with cheese
*) Hibernate Failed to get X server (with kmod-nvidia driver) and
need to reboot
Note: Nivida Proprietary driver (NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-180.51-pkg2.run) help to work hibernate (check later post).
*) Battery status (with gnome-power-manger) is not working. It was not showing Battery discharge/charge status or Plug or un-plug A/C adopter.
Fixed: After first time complete discharge, now it is working fine. and showing
status correctly
Overall it was working fine with Linux. Graphics fix is easy, Hibernate (use nvidia 's driver),
Battery status notification (fixed) are Major issue with (kmod-nvidia) driver.

Thunderbird Profile Migration: Linux to Mac
yesterday I need to migrate data from
Linux to Mac machine, while biggest problem was
Email Client configration. I have two gmail
account configurated in Linux Machine with
Thunderbird and don't like to configure account
and make 17-19 Filters again. I was very sure about
linux migration from one release (or distribution) to
another, but never tried Linux2Mac Thunderbird
before.
so, yesterday was test day for Migration Linux2Mac
thunderbird data.
just scp'ed content from (linux) ~/.thunderbird/* to
(mac) ~Library/Thunderbird/
but simple pressing thunderbird icon was not working,
but showing error like "Already running..."
then checked profiles.ini file in ~/Library/Thunderbird
aman$ cat profiles.ini //from Linux Machine
[General]
StartWithLastProfile=1
[Profile0]
Name=default
IsRelative=1
Path=6x78h8j9.default
aman$ cat profiles.ini-mac //that was old Thunderbird profile on Mac Machine (just before scp from linux)
[General]
StartWithLastProfile=1
[Profile0]
Name=default
IsRelative=1
Path=Profiles/76c9imkz.default
So Difference was between PATH, where Mac machine has
Profiles Directory, but Linux don't have. It was easy to hack
and after fix, run thunderbird and it was working fine,
sorting, filter and everything was just Normal.
Linux to Mac machine, while biggest problem was
Email Client configration. I have two gmail
account configurated in Linux Machine with
Thunderbird and don't like to configure account
and make 17-19 Filters again. I was very sure about
linux migration from one release (or distribution) to
another, but never tried Linux2Mac Thunderbird
before.
so, yesterday was test day for Migration Linux2Mac
thunderbird data.
just scp'ed content from (linux) ~/.thunderbird/* to
(mac) ~Library/Thunderbird/
but simple pressing thunderbird icon was not working,
but showing error like "Already running..."
then checked profiles.ini file in ~/Library/Thunderbird
aman$ cat profiles.ini //from Linux Machine
[General]
StartWithLastProfile=1
[Profile0]
Name=default
IsRelative=1
Path=6x78h8j9.default
aman$ cat profiles.ini-mac //that was old Thunderbird profile on Mac Machine (just before scp from linux)
[General]
StartWithLastProfile=1
[Profile0]
Name=default
IsRelative=1
Path=Profiles/76c9imkz.default

sound problem (fixed) - ASUS M3A78-EM
After installation of openSUSE 11.1, sound was not
tested. Today when run, it shows error like no
sound card working. While using yast, it failed to
configure it with error "module snd_hda_intel"
not found. Various forum, mailing list, there
was various method, but my problem was strange
with 'module not found'. I was not able to find
how to find module.
------
$lspci
00:14.2 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA)
------
Finally I find that alsa-driver package was not
installed on system from Alsa Project.
Download, Compile and install.
finally
$modprobe snd_hda_intel
works and with reboot sound works fine.
later found package "alsa-driver-kmp-pae" for same
work. This was small fix after I found pacakge:-)

Linux Phone Manager and My Phone
I used windows for my Phone to take backup and
update contacts. (This will be one of two
reasons to use, other is Phone Software Update).
Today I found a application on linux. It was quite cool.
Command Line based "GAMMU".
it worked better than my expections, Even
my Nokia 5800 is not working other than "Info"
mode, but N82 is fine.
Gammu has a Phone Database.
I put my entry here and
filled a bug here
Starting response is good and hope to fix in coming version.
Yes, it has GUI ("Wammu"),
Contact Editor and Other Screenshot
It has Windows GUI also (not used yet).
Hope it will fix soon and able to work with Nokia 5800.
